Our Story

Behind every delicious baked good is a story. Ours began in 2004, when Mariposa founder Patti Furey Crane was pregnant with her first child and craving sweets. With few good gluten-free options available, Patti started baking them herself. Three months after her daughter was born, her husband suggested she start a gluten-free bakery.

And so Mariposa began.

We started small, baking at night in a shared kitchen in West Berkeley, packing brownies and biscotti, and delivering them to local stores around the Bay Area. In 2006, we moved into our own bakery in Oakland and opened our first tiny bakeshop. Customers found us, word spread, and Mariposa grew along with the gluten-free community.

Today, more than 20 years later, we have two thriving bakeshops in the San Francisco Bay Area and ship our baked goods to customers across the country. We still make our breads, pastries, cakes, cookies, pies and other treats with the same goal we had from the beginning: to make delicious, high-quality gluten-free food that everyone can enjoy.

We continue to create options for different dietary needs, including baked goods that are dairy-free, egg-free, nut-free, soy-free and/or vegan. We source locally, organically and sustainably whenever possible and remain committed to making our products with care.

And we’re not finished growing. Our next chapter is to bring Mariposa to more communities through franchising. We hope that one day, in addition to receiving a Mariposa box at your doorstep, you might find a Mariposa bakeshop closer to home.

Thank you for inviting Mariposa into your home and for supporting our small bakery. Whether you’ve been with us for years or this is your very first box, we’re so glad you found us.

From our bakery to your table, enjoy!
